Individuals with neurodivergence may experience and interact with the world differently than most due to the unique way theirWoman smiles while talking to therapist about neurodivergence brain processes information. Neurodiverse adults offer a distinct perspective and strengths that benefit relationships, communities, and workplaces. However, research indicates that neurodiverse individuals also face higher than-average rates of unemployment, mental health problems, and loneliness.

True Life Center’s outpatient neurodivergence program in San Diego, California, provides neurodiverse adults the opportunity to improve interpersonal relationships, develop life skills, and live a more authentic and purposeful life. Our multidisciplinary team has experience working with those whose neurodivergence was acknowledged in childhood, those who are late-diagnosed adults, and those who are exploring the possibility of a diagnosis for the first time. What Is Neurodivergence?

The natural spectrum of cognitive differences, as with all human diversity, makes our world a richer and more interesting place. Neurodivergence, coined by Australian sociologist Judy Singer in 1998, refers to differences in brain function. Because modern medicine necessitates a designation of normal and abnormal, those whose brain functions deviate from most of society are often deemed neurodivergent—vs. neurotypical. Approximately 10% to 20% of the world’s population qualifies as neurodivergent.

Neurodivergence is not a diagnosis or a medical term. It is an umbrella term for several diagnoses, conditions, and states of being, including:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Sensory processing disorders
  • Down’s syndrome
  • Dyspraxia
  • Tourette’s syndrome

Neurodivergence can be correlated with but is not indicative of disability, illness, and mental health problems. Because of overlaps in symptomology with mood and anxiety disorders, neurodivergent disorders are commonly misdiagnosed or undiagnosed.

Signs of Neurodivergence

While the manifestations of neurodivergence can vary significantly from individual to individual, some signs to consider include:

  • Challenges with sensory processing (i.e., reacting strongly to loud noises or bright lights)
  • Challenges with social interaction (i.e., misreading facial cues, narrow interests)
  • Difficulties with organization, concentration, and follow-through
  • Hyperfixation on specific activities, topics, behaviors
  • Challenges with communication, nonverbal or verbal
  • Difficulty maintaining work or life responsibilities despite positive intent

We understand the way neurodivergence and mental health conditions can go hand-in-hand, and our team of psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and holistic providers are equipped to address any symptoms impacting your well-being.
